As promised, during my interview with fantasy author Dan Fitzgerald, he stayed for a little longer and answered some more questions. We talked about what he wants to see in fantasy and what he’s reading now. You might be surprised by some of the answers. We finish by chatting about the role food and food production plays in his life and his thoughts on our industrial, monoculture agriculture here in the US. Enjoy!
About Dan Fitzgerald
Dan Fitzgerald is a fantasy writer living in Washington, DC with his wife, twin boys, and two cats. When he is not writing, he might be gardening, doing yoga, cooking, or listening to French music.
He writes fantasy in part because the state of the world demands an escape, but also because fantasy provides another lens through which to view what we are living now. Part mirror, part magnifying glass, part prism.
He is fascinated by hidden and forgotten places, be they in the backyard or in the mountains of an imagined world.
What you will find in his books: Mystery. Darkness. Wonder. Action. Romance. Otherness examined and deconstructed. Queer and straight characters living and fighting side by side. Imaginary creatures and magic with a realistic touch.
What you won’t find: Wholesale slaughter. Sexual assault. Unquestioned sexism or discrimination. Evil races. Irredeemable villains. Predestined heroes. An ancient darkness that threatens to overspread the land.
